Comparing and contrasting the modernisation efforts of Essay

Comparing and contrasting the modernisation efforts of nineteenthcentury China and Japan - Essay Example The Japanese reform-minded Samurai, analyzed the situation and decided that the best way to beat the Western powers at their own game was to adapt to Western systems. This was done by launching a reform movement under the guise of restoring the emperor to power. In the process, they eliminated the power of the shogun, who was the military ruler of the Tokugawa period. This effort, carried out in 1868, is referred to as the "Meiji Restoration", since the emperor's reign name at the time was Meiji. At around the same time, china was suffering a political crisis in the form of the Taiping Rebellion (1850-1864) which was directed against the Manchu Dynasty. Though China's imperial system had flourished under the same dynasty in the 1700's, the Qinq dynasty of the Manchu's came to be regarded as 'foreign'. Another rebellion (1898-1900), known as the 'Boxer Rebellion', which was also initially an anti-Qing uprising, was played on by the Qing Dowager Empress to her advantage by re-directing the people's anger towards the Westerners. So, unlike the Japanese, the Chinese did not have the advantage of dynastic authority to serve as a focal point for national mobilization against the West.

Importance of Gertrude and Ophelia Essay Example for Free

Importance of Gertrude and Ophelia Essay The love a man has for his mother and the love he has for his girlfriend/fiance/wife are two different kinds of love that always seems to conflict one another. The mother and the female companion usually really like each other or they hate each other. In Shakespeare’s Hamlet, Gertrude and Ophelia has a steady relationship with each other. But Gertrude’s relationship Hamlet starts off as unhappy and ends with death. Throughout the play Hamlet is questioning Gertrude’s love for him and his father which cause their once steady relationship to shaken. For Ophelia and Hamlet, both were so in love, but later in the play shows Ophelia worrying about Hamlet and her love for him slowly diminishing. Gertrude and Ophelia have their own important role in the play with how they affect Hamlet’s decisions all through the play. Hamlet’s mother, Gertrude, begins the play with Hamlet upset with her for marrying his uncle, Claudius. She does not see what is wrong with the marriage and tries to tell Hamlet to get over his father’s death. The Act I clearly show that Gertrude’s and Hamlet’s mother-son relationship will never as it once was. Gertrude still tries to help Hamlet throughout the play by trying to convince Claudius to leave Hamlet alone and that Hamlet feels guilt for what he has done. Hamlet hesitate killing Claudius because he is now Gertrude’s husband and Hamlet may unconsciously feel a connection with Claudius as his stand by father. If Gertrude never married Claudius, then Hamlet would probably have the confidence to kill Claudius when he found out that he was the one that killed his father. All through the play Gertrude protects Hamlet. She unknowingly adds fuel to the flame that is Hamlet’s detestation for the marriage. With Gertrude playing the â€Å"victim† in Claudius’, Hamlet has someone who will remain faithful to him. If Gertrude knew about the plan to kill Hamlet’s father, then Hamlet would never have stayed to revenge his father’s death because the Hamlet does not have enough courage to do so. Ophelia is the daughter of Polonius and her life seems to not be under her control. Her decisions are made by what Polonius or Hamlet tells her to do. Ophelia is sweet and innocent ompared to Gertrude’s incestuous act. Ophelia keeps Hamlet calm since she is the most stable person that he has in his life. But later Ophelia goes wild because Hamlet is also crazy. Most of the characters believe that Ophelia is acting this way because of the death of her father, Polonius, but in actuality it is because Hamlet turned on her. Ophelia’s innocence was taken by Hamlet and it caused her to not listen to the advice from her brother, Laertes. Ophelia received most of Hamlet’s anger that was meant to be directed towards his mother instead. She was there for Hamlet to relieve any built up tension he had. Ophelia denied that Hamlet did not lover her, but when she died Hamlet is seen at her funeral confessing his love for Ophelia to Laertes saying that he did not mean to cause Ophelia’s death. Both Gertrude and Ophelia were the safety nets for Hamlet in the play. Even though Hamlet felt as if he could trust know one the two women in the play were meant to keep Hamlet alive as long as possible. Between Claudius killing Hamlet’s father, and Gertrude and Ophelia not knowing this fact helped push Hamlet’s verdict on what he is going to do. Shakespeare put the Gertrude and Ophelia in the play to maintain the balance of good and evil, purity and sin.

In Time Movie Review

In Time Movie Review In Time starring Justin Timberlake as Will Salas, is what I believe to be an eye-catching action thriller with every right to be on your must watch list. Breaking onto the scene just as the occupy wall street movement began to gain traction on October 28th 2011. Director Andrew Nicoll, did a fantastic job in displaying what can happen to society when the rich become driven by greed. This film was produced by Regency Enterprises and initially released in theaters. Although, it can be now viewed through everybodys favourite streaming platform Netflix. In Time finds itself to be extremely unique, separating itself from other action thrillers. People are free to live carelessly until they reach twenty-five and thats when their clock starts ticking. This is when you are given one more year to live and when that time hits zero, you time out. This results in people having to hustle or face death evident by Will saying You dont generally sleep in.. when questioned, how do people survive like this. The film is portraying Will Salas a man living day to day on his remaining time. Somehow finding himself in the possession of centuries and accused of murdering the man who gave him the time. He left him a final note reading Dont waste my time shortly before timing out himself. Leading to Will going onto finding himself falling in love with Olivia. A foil of himself rich, with time beyond his wildest dreams, edgy and against her father. Furthermore, going onto robbing time for the poor acting as a robin hood figure and escaping the timekeeper. As an action thriller movie, I was very impressed in comparison to other films that fall into the same category such as Furious Seven and Mad Max: Fury Road. In Time was not lacking in the creativity department of the plot. It was not simply a high budget movie set out to grab money. The story had depth and layers, moving from one objective to another. Unlike Mad Max: Fury Road which just focused on an escape and traveling with fuel with minor irrelevant details, coming off as a bit all over the place. In addition, Furious Seven which also has a messy plot comes off worse as a cash cow series. With simply no substance and just explosions with lack luster sound effects to tag along. This truly unique piece, does a great job of setting itself from other films within the same genre of action and thriller. I personally, am yet to see a more creative film well executed. It did a fantastic job in tying in some realism and science fiction. In what society could possibly get too at the point of over population and the rich wanting poor people to remain impoverished. I also believe the film had a very rich and satisfying production, featuring well edited settings whether it was in the corporate city, desert or the ghetto. Along with the soundtrack which added another sense to the film sometimes giving me goosebumps and not allowing my eyes leave the screen to see just what was about to happen. Furthermore, Craig Armstrong did an amazing job in the sound production truly triggering my emotions inside and anticipation for what was to happen. The only thing I wish this film included was more insight into how society got to the point of where time has taken the place of mon ey and how its ties directly with your life. I believe In Time to have included many themes such as one being time is money. Which can be taken in the literal sense of this movie because time acts as a currency and is a crucial part of everyday life, running the world. Along with that, Henry Hamilton played by Matt Bomer say For a Few to be immortal many must die this is relevant in this film since the rich only get richer and live forever, while the less fortunate wither away and struggle day to day. The themes in this movie are quite sad and can get the viewer really conflicted thinking about todays world and why some that can afford to give hoard. In conclusion, I believe this film is a must watch for any thriller fans. The balanced cast including Justin Timberlake, Olivia Wilde and Matt Bomer made for a great addition. Along with, the great use of a unique plot and great special effects. The use of imagery and themes also really gets the viewer thinking really making this film a must to any movie lover and person with an open mind.

A Picture Is Worth a Thousand Words: Visuals as a Persuasive Tool for

A Picture Is Worth a Thousand Words: Visuals as a Persuasive Tool for War Nations all over the world constantly utilize various forms of media to rally support amongst its own people. Manuscripts, newspapers and radios were and still are of the many mediums through which political figures connect and communicate with civilians. Especially during a time of war, the government sets as one of its highest priorities, the goal of keeping its people adequately informed and behind their nation’s cause. One of the most popular and persuasive forms of propaganda has been war posters. The famous age-old saying, â€Å"A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words,† is the secret that lies behind why these posters were so powerful and successful in the first place. Even though we are looking at them many centuries later, we can still feel the impact and experience the intended effects of their depictions. As Americans, many have been exposed to a range of American war posters through various means such as a school history books. There are few different war posters that are definitely worth taking a look at. Though at first glance they look extremely different, their main message is essentially the same: this war is necessary and we, as Americans, must do all that we can to help. Here’s the first poster, entitled â€Å"Don’t Let That Shadow Them† courtesy of Lawrence B. Smith. Lawrence B. Smith uses children’s innocence, helplessness and need for protection as the basis of his war poster. Through careful implementation of color and patriotic images, Smith is able to send a strong and convincing message to the American people in â€Å"Don’t Let That Shadow Touch Them.† The setting of this picture is in an open field with the shadow of the sw... ... has been used centuries upon centuries because of its effectiveness. While we can look at these political masterpieces and acknowledge the message that they are voicing, it is important that people remember to interpret with a critical eye. It’s rather funny to know that the same pictures that are convincing you that one side is the good side and the other the bad; is the same thing that people on the other side of the world, and on the other side of a war, are seeing too –but of course with the heroes and the villains reversed. Media and propaganda in general are very interesting to follow. But we should remember not to believe it all so quickly. It is important to bear in mind that the photographer or artist has a specific job to do. They must support their government and its actions. We have to keep in mind the question: who actually controls the media?

Lorex Memo

I will Indicate what Information I found Important in making the best economic decision for the target fill amount. There were several costs that we need to consider when analyzing what will return the most profit. I will walk you through the data I used, the analytical method performed, and my recommendation on what I believe would be the most profitable for Lore Pharmaceuticals. Determining the Proportion of Properly Filled Bottles I started by determining a list of target fill rates to test for your company. There Is a standard normal distribution function that can be used to determine the probability for different fill rates. I used the required fill rate of 10 ounces as a basis of lactating the proportion filled properly for that ounce level. The results only showed a 50% probability as you can see in exhibit A, in the first column. I increased the fill rate by . 1 ounces and continued to calculate the probability using the same standard normal function. These results, shown in e xhibit A, can be used to help calculate the highest possible contribution per case by considering the impact on revenue and variable costs. The results show, with every . 1 ounce increase to the target fill rate, the probability that the bottles with meet the proper fill requirement of 10 ounces goes up. Expected Revenue per Case Now that the probability of properly filled bottles has been calculated, we can determine our expected amount of revenue per case. We know that a case that Is properly filled will sell for $1 86 and a case that has been reworked will sell for 80% of fill rate of jazz. Is $167. 40.We arrive at this number by assuming 50% of the cases will be sold at $186 and 50% will be sold at 80% of $186, or $148. 80. You can see on Exhibit A, that as the probability of properly filled bottles increases, revenue also increases. This is because the higher probability that the cases will meet the 10 ounce requirement, the more cases you will be able to sell at full price. Cos t of Active Ingredients per Case When trying to maximize profit, it is important to consider what costs are going to impact the bottom line.Specifically, we will want to evaluate the variable costs that change related to the target fill line. I started with the data the company provided in the projected operating profit and I calculated what the cost per case of active ingredients per ounce would be. I included the active ingredients and the blending direct labor because these amounts correlate with how many ounces are in each total. The filling materials, filling direct labor, and filling overhead are important costs that will affect the bottom line; however they are not dependent on the target fill rate.By calculating a per ounce amount, we can calculate the active ingredient cost per case. As you can see in Exhibit A, the higher the target rate per bottle, the higher the cost per case. This is because the more ounces used to fill the bottles; the more ingredients are going to be used. Cost of Rework per Case Another cost to consider is the cost of rework per case. Unless every bottle meets the ill requirement of 10 ounces, there is going to be a rework cost. Given the hourly wage and rate at which a case can be reworked, we can calculate a per case rework amount. The higher probability that the bottles are properly filled implies a lower cost of rework. You can see in exhibit A, the cost of rework decreases as the target fill rate increases. Recommendation/Conclusion Based on the calculations, I would recommend that Lore Pharmaceuticals set a target rate of 10. 4 for the current production line of Linton. As you can see in Exhibit A, the highest contribution per case is at the 10. 4 rate. When we increase the target fill rate to 10. 5, the contribution per case decreases. Even though at a target rate of 10. Returns the highest projected revenue per case, the amount of active ingredients used to fill each bottle increases; therefore our contribution per case decreases. An alternative solution could be to invest in a more efficient production line for this drug. The quality of the production line that is being used for Linton is older and much slower than the other production lines in use. We would need to consider whether making improvements to the current production line or buying a completely ewe machine would be worth it for Lore verses using the current production line.

The Effects of Technology on Modern Life

Television has truly changed the lives of most people in Britain. Nearly all British households have at least one colour television. The amount of time people spend each day watching TV is increasingly significantly every year. In the first three months of 2010 British viewers watched a record of more than four hours of TV a day on average. Some children have become addicted to watching TV and watch it all day when not in school. Referring to Passage B, children will have watched about 25,000 hours of TV by the age of 18. I believe parents need to be stricter with their children and get them involved with sports and clubs to prevent them from watching too much TV or playing games indoors. A lot of the programs on TV today including Big Brother, The only way is Essex, etc, are reality programmes that are meaningless to our everyday lives. People will do anything to get on TV nowadays! Technology is getting more advanced each day and has taken over our lives. From small fuzzy TV’s with few channels to plasma screen TV’s with hundreds, from writing letters to instantly texting someone on a touch screen phone. These are all amazing advances in technology and have changed people’s lives. Although as it says in Passage B, TV violence contributes to real violence and it influences people into bad language, sex and pain. The Internet has also changed many people lives. In Passage A, it mentions a new technology called VOIP – Voice Over Internet Protocol, so now people can phone there friends, wherever they are, for as long as you want, for absolutely free. I think this is good and bad because all though it is fast and doesn’t cost, people may then spend to much time on their phone, knowing there are no restrictions. There are also many social network sites where you can chat to friends instantly and share personal information. People as young as 10 have an account on these social network sites, which can be highly dangerous. There are pedophiles on these sites that can easily manipulate young kids. The sites try to stop these things from happening but with so many people online, it’s almost impossible to stop them all. Facebook is one of the biggest online social networking sites with over 850million users and over 3000 employees. It is one of the fastest ways to communicate with friends and share personal information. Facebook is the fastest growing social networking site and was created in 2004. You must be 13 or older to have an account on Facebook but there 7.5 million children under 13 with accounts and 5 million under 10, violating the site’s terms of service. Technology is a massive thing in our everyday lives and we use it for almost everything. People can accomplished so many things using technology and it helped companies become more known, millions of people can watch the same thing at once, but its not just TV and Internet. With new technology we can fly jumbo jets around the world, visiting 100’s of different countries each day. Technology has changed massively within the last 20 years, which is very good, but could also be very bad. We need to control how we use technology, especially watching TV and the internet, because it is wasting our lives when they are many things to do and things t accomplish. This is what we have come to.
